Daniel Sanchez:
Good morning, everybody!

Are you ready for the start of a great season of marching band?

I'm down here in Round Rock at Kelly Reeves stadium for the Dairy Queen Texas BOA Regional in Austin. The first major competition of the season in Texas!

I've posted the schedule in the left hand panel.

It's pretty humid and there are lots of clouds, but they seem to be starting to blow out of the way and I can see some blue sky through them. Hopefully this turns into a really nice day for some great marching and music!

Daniel Sanchez:
Victoria West - Magnificant - VW kicked off this competition the right way! This show is deep and dark with a lot of punch and moments that would make a football crowd wake up and take notice. It's early in the season, so they will only get stronger.

Daniel Sanchez:
Connally - Green - Wow! What great technical woodwinds! They just play and play and play with nonstop fingers.I like the different arrangements of the Vaughn Williams and Copland pieces and appreciate the (Green) Pony and just how much technical work it is to get that timed well on the field. The colorguard had some fantastic moments, especially early on in the show. Oh, and you have to love a sousaphone solo.

Daniel Sanchez:
Lyndon B Johnson - Stained Glass - How can you not love a show that is full of awesome Respighi and filled in with Beibel's Ave Maria? LBJ has a strong low brass section that lets them lead through the St Michael opener and the mellophones to play the moving Ave Maria. There were lots of little extremely intricate technical drill things that were really surprising and refreshing to see, like a midstep halt and even a right foot stepoff to align with the music.

East View - Lots of nice music from Debussy to Barber to Gillingham and more from this non-varsity group that doesn't have a full four years of enrollment yet. The guard uniforms are gorgeous with the long flowing dresses and the tops that look like stained glass. I like that the stained glass even extended up to the bass drum heads too. :)

Lehman - Discovery - Lehman does a nice job with some unique arrangements of Dvorak's Symphony for the New World. They had some really nice woodwind moments along with a nice flute solo to open. The mellophones have a really tough assignment right down front and center during the ballad. The center drum major had a stuffed bunny that she was carrying with her too. :)

Legacy - Sakura - Such a nice clean and clear sound from this group! Especially the trumpets and the oh-so-mischievious sounding low woodwinds. This show really pops and has some real power behind it. They also have a great field presense and a really nice consistent marching style that carries through even when they are moving super fast.

Daniel Sanchez:
Pflugerville - Metropolis - Apollo Unleashed gives a great opening feel to this everyday superheroes show filled with the Metropolis Symphony. The sounds are huge and deep and the woodwinds upfront have a nice lush sound. The ballad was beautiful, but it was the closer that really stole the show with its immense power upon power that doesn't stop.

Daniel Sanchez:
McNeil - Garden of the Mind - I really like all of the little tiny hints of Pure Imagination from Willy Wonka that keep showing up in the opening portion of the show, finally leading into the full release of the theme. The clarinet duet and soloist were really awesome; it's nice to hear an articulation based solo instead of just fingers. And the Bernstein leading into the Grainger, just such a nice and lightly designed show.

Sandra Day O'Connor - Zombie Apocalypse - This show is a huge crowd pleaser! It is big and powerful and never lets you go while also never letting the main musical theme go; it keeps coming at you relentlessly from all different directions. So exciting, fun, and Thriller(ing).

Anderson - Aurora - Anderson's guard is just absolutely gorgeous in every way. From their dancing all the way to their equipment work. Just gorgeous. The opening statements of Wild Nights were big and clean and FAST! The body movements in the trumpets up front were fantastically executed. And then Vide cor Meum as always is just an amazing ballad. I can't wait to see the ending of the show later in the season.

Cedar Park - An Undying Love - Wow. Wow.... Wow. Cedar Park is a beast. A musical Beast! My jaw dropped to the floor a few times during this show. It isn't perfect and it's early in the season, and it will just keep getting better and better, unbelievably. Their sound is just so lush, rich, and powerful, yet still with tons of control. Enough control to be able to have some of the clearest Romeo and Juliet double-tongues I've ever heard on the field. And then the closing statements.... Just tingles down my spine.

Now they are big and full and powerful and clean and mature. There is a ton of music in this show and they play it with tons of confidence and poise. I can't wait to see how this show cleans up later in the year.

Rouse - Playing With Fire - I always love a Shostakovich show. I especially like that didn't just stick with the standards, but also paid proper homage to them ending with the Fire of Eternal glory. They were able to put a lot of power into that ending.

Daniel Sanchez:
New Braunfels - 13 A Study in Superstitions - NB plays this great dark film noir music from Psycho and Vertigo and more with a ton of nuance. Tons of fantastic technique that doesn't get overshadowed with power, but complimented extremely well. The guard was constantly really well integrated into the show the whole time, too.

James Bowie - To B or not to Bee - The crowd is buzzing with excitement as the Bowie brass buzzes their mouthpieces. What a well designed show from beginning to end. I love the drill design and all of its little B's that show up all throughout the show as wings or as heads of bees or everywhere. The music is so nice and powerful and yet so bumblingly graceful at the same time. The way that flight of the bumblebee runs in and out of music from Bela Bartok and Benjamin Britton and more Bs was really nice. The guard had so much great character, too! This show is so fun already, it is going to be really big by the end of the season.

Claudia Taylor Johnson - enigmatic - What a great powerful crisp and clear brass sound to open with! This show exudes weirdness, oddity, strangeness, and enigma all throughout on many different levels. The guard is eclectic and the arrangements are really irregular any enigmatic. The hand balancers! They were incredible, I couldn't stop looking back at them. I really like the ways that everything all melds together, but in completely not normal ways. In Your Eyes with the eye flags really stands out. I want to see the rest of the show!

Aledo - Halo - I like all the Respighi focusing on St Michael and his halo along with the ubiquitous Halo pop song. This band moves really well as always and has some great guard moments in the middle of some exciting drill moves. They play well and I applaud them for how well they held together as the downpour came out of nowhere. I just hope their electronics aren't ruined. Birdville - Fall - This show was basically a description of today. I like the soft, rainlike opening to Whitacre's Cloudburst (I think?), just letting the rain drop on our heads. And then leading into a really powerful Niagara Falls as we get completely drenched, leading into a beautiful leaf set as the beauty of more Whitacre comes in to bring us to the deep rich colors of fall. Great slow marching, especially in the ballad; lots of field presence.

Due to the fact that there are more storms potentially on their way and how late we are already running, I am betting that we will not be having a Finals tonight. No official word yet, just my speculation.

Cedar Ridge - - Going to BOA Grand Nationals this year. There are lots of pieces in this show that pertain to the moon. I like that they start out with the gorgeous Clair de Lune and then only later do they move into the more powerful stuff. It sets a really good mood. This band has a ton of power and yet they can really show you the softer sides of things too. I really like the constant contrast. And the guard works really hard and bring a lot to this show. I can't wait to see how much this show grows on its way to BOA Grand Nationals.

Lake Travis - Adrenaline - This show is fast fast fast! A nonstop adrenaline rush. Even Mad World, while not "fast" keeps your heart on edge. I like the guard staging with some beautiful flags. The drumline never stops playing. They are playing a TON of notes and just completely nonstop full bore flat out playing.

Correct, there has been no official word from BOA yet about Finals being cancelled, but I can fully believe that they may have told the directors already. We will just have to wait and see.

Hidalgo - I'm really glad this band got to perform today. They drove a LONG way to get here! Lots of good open hits and interesting drill moves from such a small group. I especially like the treatment of Whitacre's October and how they lead it into stronger impacting pieces.

Westwood - Wow, they are a lot louder than I ever remember them being before. They have a ton of raw power and it really digs in the constant eerie minors that all of the music is changed into. There's snippets of 1812, the Farandole, and much more, all in a minor key that just builds and builds tension realeased by tons of volume. And another thing that was quite striking was the consistency of their bent-knee marching; that's hard to get right with such a large group!

Round Rock - RR is going to BOA Grand Nationals this year - The sheer volume of this group is humongous! This show is fast and hard and with tons of both technique and of course HUGE open hits that just blow your face off. I loved the flute solo in Color of the Wind, it was a gorgeous contrast to the rest of the fast paced face melting punches in the face. This drill flies as much as the horns are loud. This is going to be a big year at GN!

Westlake - I just love how clear this band sounds. They play with such open grace and clarity and also with a ton of fun and musicality. After that opening Italian piece, I want some Italian food; it was central to a food commercial way back in the 1990's, but I can't remember what it was for. The trombone solo for Nessun Dorma was gorgeous and really brought this show home. I want to see what kind of awesome fun their closer is going to bring!

BOA Grand Nationals isn't a qualification type thing, you just sign up to do it. They take the first 90 (!) to sign up.

It costs a lot of money to go to GN, so it isn't something you can do on a qualification basis.
